Rather than prioritising control, prediction, and optimisation, it focuses on intimate, situated experience while questioning how bodies are shaped, abstracted, and often excluded and discriminated against within these technological paradigms.

Hardware and Eco-Feminist Art

Patrícia J. Reis and Mehrta Shirzadian to consider how they use performance to examine the systems that place demands on their labour and artistic production. Their practices interrogate the pressures of self-optimisation and marketability in the art world, the technological amplification of sensory perception and bodily capacities, and microbial processes that act as agents within the body. Together, these practices examine how neoliberal and institutional infrastructures shape what bodies can do and how they are valued. They ask how human, technological and microscopic bodies are regulated and controlled within systems of power, and how performance can reconfigure these hierarchies through humour, slowing down or performing otherwise.

Hardware and Eco-Feminist Art:

Hacking and Artistic Practices Towards Ethical Technology An event organised by Patrícia J. These dynamics are sometimes visible—but more often they operate at the edges of perception. The exhibition presents ceramic objects, embroidered data visualisations, and media-based artefacts that critically engage with AI’s influence in sensitive domains such as autonomous weapon systems, neurotechnologies, and the simulation of pleasure and consent. Merging speculative design with real-world data, the works examine the complex, sensorial, and material entanglements between humans and machines.

25.6.2025 - 30.6.2025

Exhibition Anti/Medea: Phantasms, Love, Deceptions Back to Athens Festival Isaia Mantion PATISION 65, Athens, Greece

6.5. to25.6.2025

Exhibition The Unexpected: Enquiries on Human-AI Interaction Artists: Pamela Breda, Patricia Reis, Ruth Schnell AIL ::

Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab
Opening:

06.5.2025, 18h Opening hours during exhibitions Mon–Fri, 11h - 18h Guided Tours: 20 May / 5 Jun, 17h Otto Wagner-Postsparkasse Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna

Tactile Agency: Rethinking Consent through Embodied AI Prototyping

Workshop Semmelweisklinik Centre for Arts and Culture, Vienna Austria This hands-on workshop explores the ethical, emotional and sensory dimensions of AI-driven human-machine interaction. You can later connect the input from your acupuncture points to Pure Data. For more sophisticated sounds and more detailed findings on how the environment changes your body we will build several prototypes of instruments. This workshop is trying to use only hardware that was created under fair labour conditions. Without harming the environment and avoiding commodity chains connected to mining. This can work if we use fair trade certified electronic components, self made and recycled electronic parts and explore the capacitive quality and resistance of our own body.

::KAIROS. These presuppositions open up a field of questions, problems and related practices. Based on selected positions in theory and practice, the talk exemplifies some of the tensions and openings from which to rethink ways of encountering the current technopolitical crisis. Commoning here serves as a framework for the process of vision and implementation, of experimentation and evaluation, of responding to the contemporary condition by creating new forms, formats and formations and questioning them again.

SALON OF OPEN SECRETS - SOS: “NEW MATERIALISM, FEMINIST PRACTICES”

Date | p.m.

Venue | Online with Karin Reisinger, Patricia J. Reis in collaboration with Lukas Vincent Walcher in the open-air segment of the experimental station Kulturdrogerie in the 18th district of Vienna, Währing and is on view from 29th of May till 20th of June 2019. The work explores the concepts of temporality, communication and translation in heterotopias – culturally, institutionally and discursively ‘othered’ spaces, inviting the interactors to have an embodied experience of the movement of a flag in the sky that can be observed underneath a temporary pavilion.

Workshop Arte Interactiva at Fundación Ludwig, Havana Biennale, Cuba

Workshop Arte Interactiva at Fundación Ludwig
, Havana Biennale, Cuba.

Group Show#FUCK REALITY: Posiciones del Arte Inmersivo

Fundación Ludwig
, Havana Biennale, Cuba.12.04.2019 -28.04.2019 Fundación Ludwig de Cuba, Calle 13 # 509 entre D y E, Vedado, Havana, Cuba Artists: Thomas Hochwallner, Nicolaj Kirisits, Martin Kusch / fitness pluriel, Bobby Malhotra, David Osthoff, Patrícia Reis, Ruth Schnell, Franz Schubert

Review at Designisso (Issue Nov 2018)

Read the review at Designisso

ROBOT LOVE

15.09 — Evoluon, Campina, Van Abbemuseum, Park Theatre Eindhoven Eindhoven, Netherlands

Zip-Scene Conference

Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest, Hungary

#FUCK REALITY

10 — Kunstraum Niederösterreich
Vienna, Austria

BANFF, Centre for Art & Creativity

Banff, Canada

ISEA Symposium on Electronic Art

Durban, South Africa [Socially engaged media art] Conversation Session: Mediated Empowerment Using Media and Technology to Amplify the Voices of Local Communities together with Jill Scott and Eugenio Tisselli http://www.isea-international.org/

WORKSHOP Hackerspaces cultures: Speculations on bioenergy towards an alternative desired future

25.05.2018| 15-17h Ars Electronica Center, Linz, Austria [Make… cooperative futures: Power, Access, Mapping, Alternative Fictions Symposium der Abteilung Mediengestaltung] How do we imagine a sustainable desired global future? Can technology still become an ally in bringing us back in touch with each other and ourselves, beyond predictability and disembodied interaction? From the Orientalist fantasies embodied by the Odalisque to contemporary AI-driven sexbots, this lecture traces how colonial and patriarchal imaginaries continue to shape representations of the female body through what I refer to as probabilistic intimacy: systems that simulate desire, consent, and care through prediction rather than embodied experience. Grounded in extractivism, invisible labour, embedded biases, surveillance, and governance, these representations increasingly affect perception, intimacy, agency, and consent while reducing experience to probabilistic simulation. In response, I propose the body as a “black box”—both an artistic strategy and a critical lens—working with its indeterminacy to reclaim embodied perception and situated experience.

Skin under skin

Skin under skin, is an audio-visual-tactile interactive installation composed of three human-scale soft objects that invite direct bodily engagement. Made from flexible materials, the work creates a sensorial and intimate relationship between the interactor and the system of the piece.
Each object integrates an audio-visual-tactile interface: flickering light, pulsed sound, and internal vibration. When the interactor approaches with eyes closed and engages through touch, the synchronisation of these stimuli generates internal visual phenomena—moving geometric patterns and colours emerging from the brain’s interpretation of altered sensory input.
Through this process, perception becomes the site of image construction. The interactor’s sensorial apparatus operates as an active system, producing individual and singular experiences. The interaction is not limited to the work’s technical system; rather, Interaction unfolds within the body, occuring within the internal space of the interactor. The interactor interacts within its system, generating new information and producing experiences in a singular way.

Sensorial Mechanisms

Artists Dorota Walentynowicz and Patrícia J. Reis create a shared visual and conceptual space shaped by a soft yet firm negotiation of the gaze. The exhibition brings together a constellation of objects, images, and surfaces that do not fully reveal themselves. Instead, they flicker between presence and concealment—between the desire to be seen and the right to refuse visibility.
Embedded within these gestures is an inquiry into the digital gaze: mediated seeing, synthetic vision, machine desire. The artists ask whether, even for a brief moment, we can step back from the flood of images that saturates our daily lives and reflect on the normative frameworks of seeing and being seen—frameworks that reinforce prejudice, capitalism, and colonial narratives.
They direct the audience’s attention toward what remains unseen, shifting the gaze away from spectacle and toward its backstage. In doing so, they expose mechanisms of power, recover what has been forgotten, and open the possibility of re-reading the history of visual media and technology from a feminist perspective.

Display Island

In Display Island, Reis focuses on the physical involvement of participants. The installation activates the viewers’ sensory systems and, in response to the excess of images dominating contemporary visual culture, proposes an alternative mode of engagement—one that operates not primarily through sight, but through bodily and auditory perception.
The circular couch installation features a sound work delivered through sound showers shaped like lampshades. The piece takes the form of a spoken, spell-like manifesto. Through layered whispers and declarative voices, it invokes Medusa and the Odalisque as guardians of embodied difference, transforming a critique of patriarchy and the commodification of pleasure into a sensorial act of resistance and remembrance.
Interwoven with the voice, a mystical noise is both heard and physically felt through transducer speakers embedded in the couch. In this way, Reis explores new forms of communication between humans and technology grounded in sensuality and intuition. Her works function as laboratories of embodied perception, in which the body is reclaimed as a full-fledged instrument for cognition and interaction with the world.

Texts & Publications

Books & Monographs
·
Exhibition Catalogues & Books
·
Academic Papers
·
Selected Press

<a href="https://patriciajreis.com/publications/2_patricia%20J.%20Reis%20Book%200.cover_hu_8cbe754beb134053.webp" data-publication-trigger aria-haspopup="dialog" aria-label="Open 2 patricia J. When the guillotine handle moves downwards, obscuring the projection, the performer is placing one part of her body on the bench.
